Do You Have a Word of the Year?

I was torn this year between two words: Power and Grace. So I have chosen both.

The new year entered with the sudden death of my dear friend, Theresa. She was, like I am, only 51 years old. She died of a massive heart attack. Theresa lived a full life, accomplishing more in her short years than many of us can hope to in a lifetime. She was so very loved and surrounded by so many friends. She is sorely missed.

She left behind not only a wonderful husband, Brian, but an 11 year old daughter, Grace – the classmate of my daughter, Caroline. Theresa’s death hit us hard for many reasons, but one was my recent cancer journey and the knowledge that that just as easily that could have been me.

So Power is about taking my power back. Here’s the harsh reality. Chemo treatments really knocked me down last year. Let’s just leave it there because whining about it doesn’t change anything.

I joined a fitness group that started January 9th and have made a commitment to working out and eating clean every single day for 30 days. I want and need to get back into shape. I want to feel better every day. I want to look better while I am at it. And most importantly, I need to be around for my daughter for a very, very long time.

In case you are wondering, I haven’t missed a day of the 30 day challenge yet. Having a group of fitness buddies is helping me tremendously with my commitment to take my power back.

Grace has many meanings but in this case I am referring to it as mercy and the grace of God. Because like my friend Theresa, there but for the grace of God go I. And I believe that power needs to be tempered by grace. Grace is where real power lies.

Dr Martin Luther King Jr epitomized the power of grace. He said: “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve… You only need a heart full of grace.”

This year, I plan to serve from my power and in grace.
